Even when no one is on the road for miles, it is wise to signal turns and lane changes. If you signal every time, it becomes second nature and helps keep you safe and collision-free. Before you make a lane change:
- Scan the road ahead and check to see what other drivers are doing (watch out for pedestrians about to step on to the road, other vehicles reducing speed, and drivers about to merge across your lane).
- Keep an eye on the brake lights of vehicles in front of you. Look for lights 3 or 4 vehicles ahead as they can be a good indicator of trouble.
- Watch out for other vehicles changing lanes and other drivers coming up fast behind you.
- Never change lanes at intersections or over solid pavement markings.
